J THE ARTIST is more than a stage name, it’s the evolution of an artist who has fully embraced his purpose.
Formerly known as J’Da Prynce, Jeremy Johnson has reintroduced himself as J THE ARTIST—a singer, songwriter, performer, educator, entrepreneur, and creative visionary whose music blends the timeless spirit of soul with contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and pop. Every song is rooted in honest storytelling, emotional vulnerability, and the belief that music can heal, connect, and transform.
A graduate of South Carolina State University, J. has spent his life creating music that feels familiar yet fresh—where classic soul dances with R&B, hip-hop, funk, and pop. You can hear echoes of James Brown’s fire, Prince’s fearless creativity, Michael Jackson’s showmanship, Beyoncé’s precision, Fantasia’s heart, and Janelle Monáe’s bold originality. But make no mistake—the sound is unmistakably his own.
His debut independent album, Open: The Release (Ten Years in the Making), lived up to its name. It opened doors around the world. After earning a coveted international performance contract, J. spent three unforgettable years touring throughout Asia, performing in Beijing, Singapore, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Abu Dhabi, and beyond. Night after night, he proved that great music speaks every language. During his residency in Thailand, the venue where he performed earned back-to-back honors as Best Live Entertainment Venue.
Back home, J. kept doing what he’s always done—putting in the work. From corporate stages and tribute productions to original concerts and recording sessions, he’s continued building a career one unforgettable performance at a time. Songs like “Unwind,” “Somebody Else,” and “Perfect Christmas” capture what makes his music special: grown-folks soul, honest lyrics, irresistible grooves, and melodies that stay with you long after the music fades.
But J. has never believed purpose ends when the curtain falls.
For more than fourteen years, he poured that same passion into the classroom as a middle school educator, encouraging young people to find their voices and believe in their own stories. Today, as President and CEO of Applaud You Talent Group, he continues to mentor artists while creating opportunities for others to shine.
As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, J. believes music is one of the few places where everybody belongs. His songs celebrate love in all its forms, honor vulnerability as strength, and remind us that joy, healing, and self-discovery are worth singing about.
